The six essential characteristics
In AnK, the six characteristics are not simple numerical values nor a mechanical inheritance from other systems: they constitute the Six fundamental Paths through which an individual can alter reality. Each character interacts with the world in a different way, and these characteristics represent the axes upon which that interaction is sustained. They do not merely describe physical or mental capacities; they describe the way in which a will projects itself onto the environment and generates consequences. Some express direct material dominance, others precise control, others resistance against the pressure of the world, others structural understanding, others immediate judgment, and others influence over the will of others. An adventurer focused on direct confrontation does not transform reality in the same way as one who prefers to understand it before acting. One who survives through bodily control produces effects different from one who alters decisions through presence alone. The characteristics do not form a complete personality, but they do constitute the framework that determines how your decisions become real impact within the story. Ultimately, every time you act in AnK, you are using one of these six Paths to impose your intention upon the world. And the world, inevitably, will respond in consequence.
Impact Strength Impose will upon matter through direct physical power.

Impact and Control represent two opposing ways of transforming matter: applying direct force or acting with calculated precision. One Path forces reality; the other finds the exact point where it yields.

Endurance and Influence describe two responses to pressure: withstand it without breaking, or redirect it by altering the will of others. Remain firm, or cause the environment to change.

Structure and Judgment mark the difference between analyzing complex systems and clearly understanding the present moment. To comprehend the world in depth, or to interpret it with immediate precision.
1. Impact - Strength
Strength in AnK represents the capacity to impose oneself physically against the resistance of the world. It is not merely muscular power or physical size, but the ability to apply direct pressure until something yields. It is the most tangible Path through which a character alters reality: through impact, forceful motion, and the material domination of the environment. When you use Strength, you do not negotiate with the situation - you confront it. You push a jammed door until it opens. You hold a structure that threatens to collapse. You break down an obstacle blocking the group's advance. You deliver a blow whose effect depends on weight, stability, and the precise transfer of energy. This characteristic is especially relevant for characters focused on direct confrontation, close combat, or situations where the solution requires overcoming resistance through clear and decisive physical power. However, its reach is not limited to armed conflict: any scene in which the environment physically opposes your will may be resolved through Strength. Choosing to enhance Strength means accepting that your way of transforming the world lies in immediate and forceful action. It is the most direct expression of will converted into impact.
2. Control - Dexterity
Dexterity in AnK represents the ability to synchronize intention and movement with absolute precision. It is not based on overpowering resistance, but on avoiding it, bypassing it, or surpassing it through refined control. It is the Path through which a character alters reality not through force, but through exactness. When you use Dexterity, the world does not yield before you; instead, you adapt to its form and find the exact point through which to move forward. You maintain balance where others would fall. You evade before impact lands. You position a tool at the precise angle. You move unnoticed when discretion is required. It is especially relevant for characters who rely on mobility, quick reaction, ranged precision, or delicate execution where the margin for error is minimal. In moments where a miscalculated gesture can ruin a scene or endanger the group, Dexterity becomes the difference between clean success and immediate consequence. Choosing to enhance Dexterity means accepting that your way of transforming the world is not to push against it, but to read its physical structure and act at the exact moment. It is the expression of will converted into control.
3. Endurance - Constitution
Constitution in AnK represents the ability to remain steadfast when the world exerts constant pressure. It does not describe how much damage you inflict, but how much you can withstand without breaking. It is the Path through which a character alters the course of events simply by remaining standing when others have fallen. When you use Constitution, you neither seek to dominate the environment nor avoid it: you endure its erosion. You withstand wounds, fatigue, poison, cold, hunger, or prolonged strain without your performance collapsing. You hold your breath as suffocation tightens. You continue forward when strength begins to fade. It is especially relevant in demanding campaigns, long journeys, drawn-out conflicts, or situations where pressure is not explosive but cumulative. Where the world does not strike once but attempts to wear you down gradually, Constitution determines whether you continue or collapse. Choosing to enhance Constitution means accepting that your way of transforming the world is not to impact it nor anticipate it, but to survive it. It is the expression of will converted into endurance.
4. Structure - Intelligence
Intelligence in AnK represents the capacity to understand the structure that sustains reality before intervening in it. It does not merely accumulate information, but processes it, organizes it, and turns it into strategic advantage. It is the Path through which a character alters the course of events through analysis. When you use Intelligence, you do not react impulsively nor rely solely on immediate experience: you search for patterns, interpret systems, connect data, and anticipate consequences. You decipher a mechanism before activating it. You reconstruct an event from scattered clues. You plan with foundation instead of improvising blindly. It is especially relevant in scenes requiring investigation, technical understanding, rigorous planning, or the study of complex phenomena. Where the world appears confusing or chaotic, Intelligence allows you to uncover the underlying logic that organizes it. Choosing to enhance Intelligence means accepting that your way of transforming the world begins by understanding it. It is the expression of will converted into structure.
5. Judgment - Wisdom
Wisdom in AnK represents the capacity to perceive, interpret, and decide with sound judgment in the present moment. Unlike Intelligence, which organizes complex structures, Wisdom grasps what is happening here and now and allows you to respond with clarity. It is the Path through which a character alters the course of events through conscious perception. When you use Wisdom, you do not analyze elaborate systems nor develop extended plans: you observe carefully, detect details out of place, and understand the nature of a situation before it spirals out of control. You sense danger before it manifests. You detect deception in the tone of a voice. You recognize when to act and when to wait. It is especially relevant in scenes where danger is not obvious, where information is incomplete, or where timing determines the difference between success and disaster. Where sharp thinking depends on immediate comprehension rather than prior study, Wisdom becomes the decisive axis. Choosing to enhance Wisdom means accepting that your way of transforming the world does not lie in forcing it nor dissecting it deeply, but in understanding it clearly at the exact moment. It is the expression of will converted into judgment.
6. Influence - Charisma
Charisma in AnK represents the ability to influence the will and emotions of others without exerting physical pressure. It does not depend solely on appearance or superficial charm; it is the capacity to alter the internal state of those around you through presence, conviction, intensity, or personal authority. It is the Path through which a character alters the course of events through direct influence. When you use Charisma, you do not force matter nor analyze structures: you transform human dynamics. You persuade someone to trust you. You awaken fear in those who hesitated. You inspire courage when the group falters. You shape perceptions to tilt a decision in your favor. It is especially relevant in social scenes, delicate negotiations, moments of leadership, or situations where the outcome depends more on emotional response than on strength or logic. Where words, gestures, or mere presence can tip the balance, Charisma becomes the determining factor. Choosing to enhance Charisma means accepting that your way of transforming the world lies in transforming the people who inhabit it. It is the expression of will converted into influence.
7. Balance Between the Paths
None of the Paths exists in isolation. Although each characteristic represents a distinct way of transforming the world, a complete character emerges from the tension between several of them and from the balance you decide to build between their extremes. Mechanical and narrative identity does not come only from what you excel at, but also from the weaknesses you accept and the combinations you prioritize. One character may impose their will through Impact and endure through Endurance. Another may read reality through Structure and respond through Judgment. Another may rely on Influence to alter others while using Control to execute precisely when the moment arrives. Each combination reshapes how you face conflict, how you resolve scenes, and what kind of presence you project within the group. For that reason, when building your characteristics, it is not enough to think in terms of a single high score, but of the overall shape they create together. The Paths are not sealed compartments: they are a map of intentions. And the balance between them determines whether your character feels brutal, precise, resilient, lucid, perceptive, or commanding when the story forces them to act.
How to Choose Your Characteristics in 30 Seconds
You do not need to study theory to choose your characteristics well. Simply answer one clear question: how do you want your character to transform the world when the situation becomes difficult?
- 1. If you prefer direct and forceful action, prioritize Impact (Strength).
- 2. If you value precision, mobility, and exact execution, prioritize Control (Dexterity).
- 3. If your idea is to outlast others and remain standing when others fall, prioritize Endurance (Constitution).
- 4. If you are drawn to analyzing, planning, and understanding before acting, prioritize Structure (Intelligence).
- 5. If you want to react with clarity, detect threats, and make sound decisions at the right moment, prioritize Judgment (Wisdom).
- 6. If you prefer to persuade, lead, or alter emotions and decisions, prioritize Influence (Charisma).
In summary, there is no universally correct choice. What matters is the way you wish to interact with the world. That is the true axis of your character.
